Platypus Rock is the tiniest official town in Tennessee

a brown platypus built out of LEGO bricks

Platypus Rock was named, somewhat unimaginatively, after the only unique feature that stuck above the ground and could be seen from a distance – a rock that was quite obviously shaped like a platypus.

Platypus Rock was founded in 1886 and we got our Town Hall finished in 1891. We built our fire station 3 in 1932. We know these dates because they are set in stone in the building facades. If we can ever hire an archivist, they can get more of our history documented here. Some say we are a city frozen-in-time somewhere roughly around 1930s to 1950s Americana.

We do not know our current population because they always manage to skip us when they do the census. I suppose we could just walk around town and count ourselves, but it is not important enough to us to bother doing it. The city of Lebanon, TN has grown around us on all sides and now completely surrounds us making us an enclave – a city surrounded by another city. This is similar to Red Bank, TN surrounded by Chattanooga and Forrest Hills, TN surrounded by Nashville. Lebanon is a friendly neighbor, but we still maintain our independence and our citizens do not pay taxes to Lebanon or allow their police to patrol our roads.

The mayor of Platypus Rock, TN asked me to create a website for the town, but he does not pay me. So, this is all he got.

If you want to learn more about our town or see it in person, you will have to wait. We don’t allow outsiders in town. You can peer in from the city limits on the outskirts of town, but don’t step into the town or you will be asked to leave for trespassing. We my be tiny, but we are tough.

It is not that we are mean, we are just tiny and don’t have room for you. They have plenty of room in our neighboring towns of Lebanon, Mt. Juliet, Gallatin, and Murfreesboro, TN.
